After my divorce in 1996, I found myself living in a one bedroom penthouse apt on the 10th floor of Ashley Towers in downtown Macon, with a nice balcony view of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and all of west and southwest Macon. This transition also coincided with a newly discovered love for old Irish and Scottish folk songs, and in those days before the internet, if one heard a song, but could not understand parts of a lyric, one had to make special trips to the main branch of the library downtown, and pore over pages of forgotten rhyme to get to the piece of lyric being searched for.

In one corner of the bedroom was a 4 track cassette multitrack recorder, a Peavey mixer, a mic, an acoustic guitar, and a very small Yamaha synth with those tiny keys that were almost too small for my fingers. That was how these songs were made, and preserved on cassette tapes until re-mastering took place in the winter of 2011. The songs are:

This collection of songs is the 1st full series of music completed using my 24 track digital recorder, which allows me to record 24 bit WAV. files, giving the music more headroom, more air, or in other words, more room to breathe. The tracks feel fuller, wider, and the use of 24 tracks gives me more room in the sound to create more expanded arrangements, something I was somewhat limited in doing with the previous 8-track. As is usually the case, all songs are written, performed, mixed and post production mastered by the Hermit of Rogers Ave. I took the above photograph at the Museum of Art in Denver CO when Susan and I were there in the summer of 2011.

Individual selections can be listened to on your computer by simply clicking on the song you wish to hear on the jukebox. I understand that there may also be a desire to burn a hard copy of this music to CD. Simply go to the jukebox, click on 'share', then 'link to mp3'. A song list will appear below. Just highlight the song you want downloaded, and click 'download' to save each song individually to your desktop or designated folder. Once all the selections have been downloaded, you can burn a CD and enjoy the music on the playback unit of your choice.

Paul McClelland & Friends-The Dream Pop Project (Spring, 2011)

Dream Pop. The essence of the music is a focus on ethereal textures and moods, rather than on propulsive rock riffs. Breathy, high-register female vocals or almost whispered male vocals are usually the means of lyrical delivery; lyrics are generally introspective and existential in nature. Cover art tends to consist of blurry pastel imagery and/or stark minimalist designs.

With that description in mind, I began "The Dream Pop Project", one of the final collections recorded and mixed on the Tascam 8-track workstation in my home studio.

Many of the songs are written and performed entirely by me, from the drums and bass, to the layered guitars, keyboards and vocals. I am also the sole mixer, and was responsible for all post-production.

The three collaborations at the end of the collection were made possible via internet file transfers, with friends from as far away as Germany and the U.K. able to download a section of music I was working on, add to it, and send it back to me. So musical colleagues from around the globe helped "An Everlasting Dream" become a bit of a sonic nightmare during the middle section, and soundfile exchanges also allowed "The Seven Stars" to become a celestial space jam.

It is my understanding that Pointillism, in the art world, is defined as a series of colored dots arranged in such a way, that when one stands back from the individual dots, a complete picture appears. The title "Pop Pointillism" came to me during the recording of this collection of tunes, because it was recorded in quite that way..dozens of sections of music, each recorded individually, with their own color and shading, and once the editing within each song is done, and one stands back, notices that out of many sections comes a complete song.

In most sections of a song, the edits are seamless, thanks to today's advanced aural technology. In other places, the edits are obvious. (intentionally so). you won't be able to count them all, but there are many.

Susan: "Did you mean to put all of those bells and all of the chiming effects in these songs?"

Paul: "Yes"

Every sound is an intentional effect. Chiming effects, bells, harpsichord, music boxes, glockenspiel, and a new-found love for cello and timpani. This is a keyboard-based effort, and my first in so many many years. The only stringed instruments are the bass guitar throughout the collection and the ukelele on 2 songs ("Oh, Jenny" and "Little Note Lullaby") Everything else is a sound texture coming from the Roland keyboard or the Roland and Korg modules.

This "modular" way of recording music was popularized and mastered by Brian Wilson in the mid-60's, and once again brought to my attention over the past couple of years by the UK's Stephen Newcombe, who has taken this approach to mixing and arranging music and expanded on it with amazing results. I would like to thank Stephen , pop magician that he is, for his continued inspiration.

This was a tremendous fund-raiser for the Children's Hospital at the historic Douglas Theater in 2000, Macon, GA. The band comprised of copywriting, sales, and programming from Z108 radio for a great cause. It was a novel idea, and one that I would challenge any other radio station to do: Put a band together from staff, and pull it off. It shows the great talent of my co-workers at the time, and the incredible talent all over Macon, GA. It was a thrill to play the Douglas Theater, and the crowd loved it. Enjoy.!!

After 30 years in the radio business (18 years as morning host for Z93.7's 'More Music Morning Show'), I left radio in October, 2008, and took a position as an audio producer for a local ad agency. words and music by Robert Burns--(25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796) (also known as Rabbie Burns, Scotland's favourite son, the Ploughman Poet, Robden of Solway Firth, the Bard of Ayrshire and in Scotland as simply The Bard) was a Scottish poet and a lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a "light" Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these his political or civil commentary is often at its most blunt.

The beauty and scope of his poetry is personally astounding. For instance, in "The Winter it is Past", Burns addresses the age old question of never being able to predict the opposite sex:
"My love is like the sun in the firmament does run,
forever constant and true,
but her's is like the moon that wanders up and doon,
and every month it is new."
...and in one verse of "Green Grow the Rushes O", not only does he state that the Almighty Creator is in fact a woman, but "her practice hand, she tried on Man, then she made the lasses-o"
(Creating Man, a practice round. The Lasses, perfection.)

Two of the most important contributions from Burns is, 1st and foremost, his lyrics, which are among the most beautiful in the English language, addressing with precision such diverse topics as love, loss, societal status, slavery and the charms of nature. (Not to mention the erotic and quite bawdy verses in the little known collection "The Merry Muses of Caledonia")
But his 2nd contribution is that of a musical archivist. Burns would attach his lovely words to older Scottish airs, and in doing so, preserved the ancient melodies which otherwise might have been lost over time.

With all of this in mind, this collection of my favorite Robert Burns tunes came about in the late 90's, using my 4-track multitrack tape recorder. It was remastered in the winter of 2008 in time for what was to be the Bard's 250th birthday commemoration. Please enjoy often.
